Dates for our next conference will be available Fall 2019.

After five years of world-renowned presenters, memorable performances in the heart of New York City, and an alumni network of over 250 that spreads across the US, the Artist as Citizen Conference is taking a year to gather its constituents together to celebrate, reassess, and renew its commitment to strengthening the impact of the arts in our society.

In 2019, we’re hosting a Convening at Juilliard for conference leadership, past and future supporters, and alumni to reckon with how much we’ve accomplished, how much work is still left to do, and all that has changed around us since we set off on this course in 2014. We intend to emerge from the 2019 Convening with a more precise, more sustainable, more strategic vision that incorporates a multiplicity of perspectives, and that sets the stage for the best Artist as Citizen Conference yet in 2020!

Therefore, we are not accepting new applications at the moment.

The Artist as Citizen Conference welcomes arts educators and administrators at all stages of their careers to join us for a unique professional development opportunity: the AAC Conference Educator’s Track. As an artist, how does one’s work reflect the struggles of one’s times? Award-winning Nigerian-American activist and visual artist, Adejoke Tugbiyele, is inspired by artists who “made it their duty to hold a mirror up to society through their work, especially when the reflection is quite ugly and traumatic.” Participants will get an opportunity to meet, engage and create alongside this groundbreaking artist whose work is helping to break down barriers and “imagine a future of equality for all regardless of race, gender, class or sexuality.”

Jobs are scarce and talent alone no longer assures success. Today’s performers need to hone their entrepreneurial skills and forge their own paths. In the end, as artists we know we will be judged largely by the work we make, and that however rich the theoretical underpinnings of our art may be, the work can and must speak for itself. Inspired by a common prompt and working in small groups, The Creation Lab will be a no-holds-barred, non-hierarchical and thoroughly interdisciplinary rehearsal process culminating in ten-minute sharings on Thursday evening at the Glorya Kaufman Studio at Juilliard.
