ASTEP and the Artist as Citizen Conference grew out of a larger national movement towards heightened social consciousness in and through the arts. Learn more about ASTEP’s mission and history, or check out the conference’s own origin story to learn more about our roots.

The part AAC plays in this shift is to provide an annual booster-shot of connectivity, knowledge and encouragement to 50 emerging young artists poised and capable of making a major positive impact on their communities. In developing the capacity of diverse leaders in cities and towns across America, we multiply the reach of our message exponentially: the arts are not merely an indulgence but a fundamental human right, and artists have a pivotal role to play in the healing of our planet.  If you want to join us in this effort, please learn more about the various ways you can contribute.

We are not alone in this enterprise. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and have many esteemed colleagues in this movement whom we work alongside and are inspired by. Though this list is by no means exhaustive, below is a short sampling of organizations we are in conversation with.
